We are honored to be able to present you with one of the truly great American Modern Jazz Pianists. Steve Kuhn is making a VERY RARE California appearance, just for us!

Because he seldom plays on the West Coast, Steve Kuhn is not well known to L.A. jazz fans, except to true jazz afficionados. The last time Kuhn led a group in the L.A. area was 6 years ago!

In the 1960's Steve Kuhn became the original pianist with John Coltrane’s group, before McCoy Tyner, then played and recorded for 3 years with Stan Getz, later with Art Farmer, and has led his own trio for over 40 years. Kuhn is a prolific composer and recording artist, having appeared on over one hundred records starting in 1957 and continuing in the present with his latest release “Promises Kept” on ECM, which features all his original compositions with a string orchestra.

My personal feelings about Kuhn run very deep. Ever since I heard a mid-1960's Kuhn trio album called "Three Waves", I have been a lover of his wonderfully lyrical, passionate style of piano. In my mind there is no other pianist alive who has his ability to be both so lyrically entrancing, and hugely powerful. Kuhn knows how to build great wavelike crescendos of notes in swirling patterns, then breaks into swinging jazz, then creates a little melody with a few notes. He grabs the listener and won’t let go, taking him on a ride through all sorts of emotional terrain.
And throughout, there is always great respect for the essence of the song, the melody, the chords, beautifully re-harmonized. Kuhn has plenty of pianistic technique, and can spin out long lines that build tension, then finally release, only to build again. The best example of this is his version of “Alone Together” from one of his best trio albums ,“Looking Back”. You can hear it on this website, along with a gorgeous example of his ballad work, playing the well known “Stella By Starlight” in which he composes a series of new melodies over the changes. For pure passion, listen to his solo piano version of “Last Tango in Paris”.

East Coast Bassist David Finck is another lesser known gem - and ranks with the greatest jazz players of his generation. Listen to his solo on "Stella By Starlight" for a startlingly original and musical approach rarely heard on his instrument.

West Coaster Joe LaBarbera will be on drums. Joe is well known throughout the world as a very versatile and sensitive musician.

Here is your one chance to hear three masters of their instruments, in a very rare single day performance at our Rising Jazz Stars Center.
